VENOMOUS SNAKE IN INDIA

2025-04-26

India is home to several venomous snake species. Some of the most notable ones include:

King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah): The king cobra is the longest venomous snake in the world. Its venom is not the most toxic, but its large amount of venom and potent neurotoxins can be fatal if untreated.

Indian Cobra (Naja naja): Commonly found across the Indian subcontinent, the Indian cobra's venom is a potent neurotoxin that affects the nervous system, potentially causing paralysis and death if bitten.

Russell's Viper (Daboia russelii): This snake is found in much of India and is responsible for many snakebite incidents. Its venom is highly hemotoxic, causing severe tissue damage and internal bleeding.

Saw-Scaled Viper (Echis carinatus): Known for its aggressive nature, the saw-scaled viper is responsible for many bites. Its venom is also hemotoxic and can cause severe swelling, blood clotting, and even death if not treated.

Common Krait (Bungarus caeruleus): Found in India, this snake's venom contains neurotoxins that can cause paralysis and respiratory failure, often leading to death without treatment.

Banded Krait (Bungarus fasciatus): Similar to the common krait, the banded krait’s venom is also neurotoxic and can cause paralysis, especially affecting the respiratory muscles.

Green Mamba (Dendrotoxin): While more commonly found in Africa, there have been some reports of mambas in southern India, though they are quite rare.

If bitten by a venomous snake, immediate medical attention is necessary for the administration of antivenom. Always exercise caution in areas where these snakes are found.
